Meet Jodi Nelson

Career Development Advisor at the School of Business Graduate Programs.

If you're a graduate business student, you have probably met Jodi at a networking event around campus or while attending one of her Career Management Seminars. Or maybe you know Jodi because you have seen her for a one-on-one career advising appointment.

Jodi started her coaching and mentoring career as a peer advisor when she was an undergraduate business student at the University of Oregon. She then came to the Portland State MBA program, where she worked as an Academic Advisor for the School of Business Undergraduate Programs

Jodi refers to higher education as "a family business." Both of her parents are educators and she has always been drawn to the atmosphere and the sense of camraderie at a university.

“I have always loved school,” she says. “Everyone here is striving to make themselves better.”

In her role as a Career Development Advisor, Jodi plays a large part in helping graduate business students achieve their potential. She coaches students on job search strategies, career planning, and resume and cover letter writing. She also organizes seminars and career panels to help students learn more about career paths and planning.

This year she served as Chairperson for the NW MBA Career Consortium, the organization responsible for the annual MBA Career Conference. As Chairperson, she implemented improvements to the events such as seminars and company info sessions.

One of her favorite duties as an advisor is helping students practice their interview skills through mock interviews, either by phone or in-person. She also conducts advising appointments over the phone for students who can't make it to campus.

Jodi says that the most rewarding part of her job is when a student gets a job or internship that they've really worked hard to obtain. And she also has some advice for MBA student job seekers:

“Start early!” she advises. “Not only should you start applying for jobs early, but you should start planning and networking early.”

In her spare time, Jodi enjoys cooking, baking, grocery shopping, searching for new recipes and “pretty much anything food related.” She also likes to go running (“to balance all the eating!” she jokes.) These days, she also spends a lot of her free time decorating her new house.

Current students can schedule an advising appointment with Jodi in PSU CareerForward.
