Honoring Indigenous Peoples Day at PSU

October 10, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

Please join me, along with our entire Portland State community, the City of Portland and the State of Oregon in honoring Indigenous Peoples Day.

PSU celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day and stands with our Indigenous students, faculty and staff. Many peaceful observations of Indigenous Peoples Day are scheduled for today.

We acknowledge and honor the Indigenous Peoples, whose traditional and ancestral homelands we live on and on which our university stands.

We honor the Multnomah, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Tumwater, Watlala bands of the Chinook, the Tualatin Kalapuya and many other Indigenous Nations of Nichiwana, the Big River, the Columbia River.

We acknowledge that we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon Indigenous Peoples.

We acknowledge the collective work of many Native Nations and communities, leaders and families who are demonstrating resilience, resistance, revitalization and healing.

We have much to learn from the culture, values and traditions of Indigenous people as we seek greater justice, protection of natural resources and effective strategies for collective response to the challenges that face us.

Sincerely,

President Stephen Percy
