President Wim Wiewel honored students, faculty and others on May 14 for their contributions and leadership in promoting diversity at Portland State.

“The challenges that we have as a campus and community about difficulty conversations about race and other differences are important for us to have,” Wiewel told an overflow crowd at the Native American Student and Community Center who gathered for the 10th annual President’s Diversity Awards.

Alma Trinidad, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, gave the keynote address urging the university community to welcome and support the growing number of people from different cultures who call PSU home. Trinidad, who grew up on the Hawaiian island of Molokai and was the first in her Filipino family to attend college, noted that “aloha” is love in Hawaiian and called on the campus to work together  “to paddle this canoe of aloha and social change.”
