Portland State Will Require Covid-19 Vaccine Starting Fall Term
Dear Campus Community,
Portland State University’s vibrant urban location draws thousands of students, faculty and staff to campus from across the Metro area, giving PSU a unique responsibility to do everything we can to guard against the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
All of us are eager to put the COVID-19 pandemic behind us and come together again in person as a campus community. Widespread vaccination is our clearest and best path toward that future. The COVID-19 vaccines have been proven safe and effective in preventing the spread of the coronavirus, and PSU is committed to being a partner in the public health of our region.
Starting fall term 2021, the COVID-19 vaccine will be required for in-person students, faculty and staff unless they claim a medical or religious exemption. Until the Food and Drug Administration has fully approved at least one vaccine, a personal exemption is available. Once one or more of the vaccines receives full approval, the personal exemption will be discontinued. Details of the employee vaccination requirement will be determined in consultation with PSU’s faculty and staff leadership and labor union partners.
All Oregonians age 16 or older are eligible to receive a vaccine at no cost. Getting vaccinated protects you, your family and your community. I urge students to make an appointment to be vaccinated as soon as possible. To help, PSU plans to host a vaccine clinic on campus this month that will be open to all students, staff and faculty, along with their immediate family members. We expect to have more information on the time and location in the coming days.
Vaccine appointments are also available throughout the community, including in retail pharmacies. Appointments at the Oregon Convention Center, the state’s largest vaccination clinic, can now be scheduled at all4oregon.org. Public health officials have created a mapping tool to help find locations offering vaccines, with information offered in 11 languages. The Center Student Health and Counseling will continue to provide COVID-19 testing services and is an approved vaccine site.
We’ll be sharing more information about the vaccination requirement and vaccine clinic in the coming days. In the meantime, thank you for being part of our community. I look forward to seeing you all again in the fall.
