Budget update and Town Hall

Dear Campus Colleagues,

I am writing today to share an update on the Portland State budget for the upcoming year. The university faces a significant shortfall for the 2022 academic year. Between now and May, decisions will be made on the approach for the next year. We also know that our budget challenges will continue beyond this year. In response, work is beginning on a more comprehensive three-year strategy.

In support of the value PSU places on transparency in decision making, our aim is to provide the resources necessary for understanding the university’s budget and the potential impacts of pending adjustments.

For the last year, PSU has been challenged by the ongoing pandemic and a decrease in enrollment. We will endeavor to address the 2022 shortfall through a combination of continuing a practice of reserve spending, deploying federal relief funds, considering a modest tuition increase and making incremental cuts to budgets across the university.

Please join us February 22, 2 - 4 p.m. for a Budget Town Hall that will include an update on our current year budget, enrollment and budget forecasts. We will also provide information on the longer range tactics we are implementing in order to emerge as a stronger institution, better equipped to serve the changing demographics of our students.

The Town Hall will be livestreamed via https://video.ibm.com/channel/vGfGtyfbjw. Submit questions for consideration to townhall@pdx.edu
