Information session on the Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program

About the CLS
The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language program. Students live and study for up to 10 weeks at over 20 sites abroad during the summer, covering the equivalent of a full year of university-level language study.

All CLS Program costs are covered for participants, including:

  •     round-trip domestic & international travel
  •     pre-departure orientation in Washington, DC
  •     room & board, living stipend
  •     7-10 weeks of group-based intensive language instruction & course materials

Languages & Levels

  •     Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu: Beginning
  •     through advanced levels;
  •     Arabic, Persian: Advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;
  •     Chinese, Japanese, Russian: Intermediate and advanced levels.

Program sites may include Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Russia, South Korea, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkey, or other countries where the target languages are spoken.

All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants must be enrolled in a U.S. degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level. All candidates must have completed at east their first year of university-level study by the beginning of the summer institute. Students in all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
