Michael Simmons has taught eight years of ART 312, Art in the Elementary School at Portland State. Michael bases most of his class objectives through integration of the visual arts and classroom academics because of his 24 years of teaching art at the Buckman Arts Focus School, K-5, in SE Portland Public Schools. The Art Methods students visit the Buckman School once a quarter to experience an on stage performance by our students. These performances have many variables of Multiple Intelligences, Linguistics, Kinetics, (Music, in the form of writing songs, chorus and percussion), spatial arts, the interpersonal and intrapersonal, math and nature.

Michael recently participated on a (two years) writing team in forming new Oregon Art Standards, K-12, called OPALS project of the OAAE, which the Oregon State Board of Education just adopted. Michael has recently won two National Art Education Awards, The Oregon Art Teacher of the Year, in 2012, and the National Art Education Association Pacific Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year, 2014.
