What happens to my benefits while I am on an unpaid Family Medical Leave?

An employee's mandatory benefits such as health, dental, and vision, continue during your leave even if you are on unpaid leave protected under the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act. If the leave is only protected under the Oregon Family Leave Act an employee on unpaid leave will be subject to COBRA (Continuation Omnibus Benefits Reconciliation Act) and as such must pay full premiums for the month following any month that fall under 80 hours of paid time.

An employee's optional benefits, such as short term and long term disability, additional life insurance, flexible spending, and so on are required to be self-paid. The Office of Human Resources notifies employees of continuation of and/or payments required for optional benefits.
