Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal act that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. Thus, FERPA applies to Portland State University. FERPA penalizes educational institutions by permitting the U.S. Department of Education to withhold federal funds from those institutions which have a policy or practice of permitting the release of education records of students without written consent.
