Dr. Mark L. Berrettini is a Professor of Film Studies and the Director of the School of Film. He teaches core and elective courses in the Film Major, including film history, theory, and genre. His book Hal Hartley (2011) is included the Contemporary Film Directors series published by the University of Illinois Press, and he has published essays in peer-reviewed journals, such as Camera Obscura, Cinema Journal, and Scope, and in the book collections The Last Western: Deadwood and the End of American Empire (Bloomsbury Academic, 2013), US Independent Film after 1989: Possible Films, (Edinburgh University Press, 2015), and The Cinema of Hal Hartley: Flirting with Formalism (Wallflower/Columbia University Press, 2017). He holds a PhD from the University of Rochester, and a BA cum laude in Film, Television & Theatre from the University of Notre Dame.
