New deans appointed

Provost Sona Andrews has announced the appointment of PSU professor Laura Burney Nissen as dean of the School of Social Work, and Steve Percy, University of Baltimore, as new dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs. Nissen begins her appointment immediately, and Percy will start June 1.

Nissen, a professor of social work, has taught at Portland State for 14 years. Her appointment at PSU coincided with being designated as national program director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation national Reclaiming Futures initiative from 2000 to 2012. The initiative is housed in the PSU Regional Research Institute. Nissen's scholarly work focuses on strengths-based approaches with youth and families, community collaborative change models, increasing equity in justice and treatment practice settings, and service innovations. Percy is founding dean of the College of Public Affairs at University of Baltimore. The college was started in 2011. Before joining UB, Percy held various administration posts for 22 years at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Percy is considered a leader in building community partnerships and has substantial experience in enrollment management strategies. Read more
