Students from PSU’s MESA program invited to meet President Obama

(Portland, Ore.) February 17, 2011 - President Barack Obama will be visiting Oregon to tour Intel's campus in
Hillsboro. Students from Portland State University's (PSU) MESA program, one of Intel's science, technology,
engineering and math education programs (STEM) have been invited to meet Obama.

The MESA, math engineering and science achievement, mission is to provide students underrepresented in
the fields of mathematics, engineering, science and technology with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to
develop their talents, explore technology-based careers, enter college and compete successfully in the

"It is estimated that in the next 10 years, a majority of our engineering and science workforce will retire," said
David Coronado, director of the MESA. "There is a critical need to fill the pipeline with a new generation of
engineers and scientists to fill this gap. There is also a critical need to diversify the workforce with companies
like Intel seeking qualified diverse employees."

MESA addresses Obama's call for investments in technology and innovation emphasized in his State of the
Union address.

"Our invitation highlights the success our program has had since we started in Oregon in 1989. It is great to
be recognized for the hard work our staff and teachers are doing on a daily basis. We all share in this

development of the next generation of innovators. "Without support from organizations like Intel," said
Coronado, "programs like MESA could not have the impact that we have."

Four students from the MESA program, all currently in middle school, and Coronado will meet Obama and
be front-and-center during his speech. "The students are very excited to be a part of this momentous
occasion," said Coronado. "They are dedicated, hard working students who represent our countries future."
