The Center for Academic Excellence at Portland State University was awarded a three-year grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service entitled Oregon Civic Solutions: Statewide Partnerships for Public Service. The 2005-06 academic year marks the third year of Civic Solutions funding. This grant provides resources for Oregon higher education institutions to engage in activities that accomplish the following goals:

1) Civic Education

Support enhanced civic education programming and integrate specific civic skill development into curricula at all participating postsecondary institutions (see attached for definition of civic education);

2) Build Community Capacity

Promote sustained, reciprocal partnerships between higher education and community-and faith-based organizations that increase community capacity to address hunger in Oregon, enhance K-12 education, and address issues relevant to the urban-rural divide in Oregon; and

3) Focus on Higher Education

Galvanize the state’s private/public colleges and universities to focus their faculty, students, staff and other institutional resources on three of Oregon’s most pressing social issues: decreasing hunger, enhancing K-12 education, and reducing the state’s urban-rural divide.
