(Portland, Ore.) September 27. 2010 -- Portland State University welcomed an estimated nearly 30,000 students to campus Monday for the first day of fall classes, record enrollment at the largest university in Oregon.

Nerves and excitement filled the campus as students asked for directions, caught up with old friends, met their professors, and worked on laptops outside in the warm fall sun.

To accommodate the enrollment growth, the University is providing more academic support and building more classrooms, labs, and residence halls. That’s in addition to the new Student Recreation Center, newly renovated Lincoln Hall, more bike parking, and a new MAX line to campus.

“I think it will be fun and a lot of work.” said Mireya Burke, a sociology major who transferred from Portland Community College this fall. "I’m so stoked to be here."
