PORTLAND – The Portland State volleyball team welcomed back several former greats to the Peter W. Stott Center Saturdaynight for its annual Alumni Match.

"It's awesome to see everyone who's played for us in the past come back. They're a great group of characters," head coach Michael Seemann said following the match. "That core group that came were some of the more pivotal transition players that helped turn this program around. They created a culture of winning. It was great to have all that history across the net."

The Alumni Match went four sets with the current Vikings taking all four, though the alumni did their best to give the current team a run for their money. Seemann and the Vikings did use this match as their final tune-up against another opponent before opening the season next week.

"I thought we played a little tentative at first, which is why we do these things," Seemann added of his team's play. "Every step we take towards actually playing that gets better. I liked the way we got more opportunistic as the match went on, free balls were terminated more frequently. We still have some work to do but we're getting closer to where we want to be to start the season.

The Vikings begin their 2013 campaign at home when they host the Northwest Challenge Friday and Saturday Aug. 30-31. They open with Gonzaga Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. before facing No. 5 Washington and Boise State on Saturday.
