Professor Berrin Erdogan named Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science

Berrin Erdogan, researcher and professor at The School of Business at Portland State University, was honored by being named a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (APS).

More than 35,000 leading psychological scientists, academics, clinicians, researchers, educators, administrators and students from more than 80 countries are members of APS. APS is committed to combining traditional scientific values of rigor and transparency with cutting edge methods and innovative practices in the conduct and application of research. Fellow status is awarded to APS members who have made sustained outstanding contributions to the science of psychology in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or application.

“I am honored to be recognized as an APS fellow and join a group of scholars I respect and look up to,” said Erdogan on her designation. “Being recognized as someone who has made an impact on the field of psychological sciences is a great feeling.”

Erdogan joined PSU in 2002, and teaches courses on organizational behavior, human resources management, reward systems and performance management at undergraduate and graduate levels. Erdogan’s research focuses on two themes. First, she explores leadership styles, and the impact of manager-employee relationships on employee retention, effectiveness and well-being. Secondly, her research explores employee feelings of overqualification in a new role, and the consequences of overqualification. Her research has covered and contributed to a broad range of various industries and organizations around the world, including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, education, information technology, construction and banking. 

Erdogan was previously awarded the fellow designation by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in 2013. She has been appointed to several prestigious editorial boards, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Personnel Psychology where she also served as an Associate Editor. She was the first US-based scholar to be selected as an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. Erdogan has authored four textbooks, which are widely used at universities around the world, and have been awarded the 2011 and 2018 Text and Academic Authors Association Textbook Excellence Award. 

“Few faculty in our field amass the number of top-tier publications that she has since completing her Ph.D.,” said Talya Bauer, PSU business professor and Erdogan’s long-time research partner. “Her quality and quantity of scholarly work is  impressive, unusual and exceptional.” Bauer, who was named APS fellow in 2005, nominated Erdogan for the honor.

“It is not surprising given my experience working with her on publications, book chapters and textbooks, that the popular media has noticed the relevance and high-quality of her work as well as she has a keen understanding of which questions are at the same time important and interesting to address,” added Bauer. 

To date, Erdogan has published over 60 journal articles and book chapters. According to Google Scholar, Erdogan has amassed over 8,600 citations since 2002, which is far beyond the average number of citations for researchers over a 17 year period.

“This is a major accomplishment and indicates continued activity throughout her career with no signs of slowing down,” said Bauer.
