Sherwood School District has selected Phil Johanson as its new chief financial officer.

The top finance position oversees the school district's almost $63 million budget, contract negotiations and construction.

Johanson comes from Business Oregon's Infrastructure Finance Authority, where he was the financial services manager since 2009. Before that, he worked in Mt. Hood Community College's finance office for 15 years, according to a release.

The school district said Johanson is a certified public accountant with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Portland State University

Johanson comes to Sherwood schools at a time when years of budget cuts may come to an end. The school district has been more cautious with new funding sources than other local districts. This year's budget does not hinge on revenue from cuts to the Public Employees Retirement System and a Gain Share donation from Washington County.

Wayne Lowry, the previous finance director and former school board member, stepped down after five years to accept a top finance job in Deschutes County.

Superintendent Heather Cordie said in a release that the district spent four months trying to replace Lowry in order to find a candidate who was "exactly the right fit."

Johanson's annual salary will be $112,393, compared to Lowry who made $128,702 in his final year.

Johanson starts working Oct. 24. Kathy Rodeman, who was hired as interim chief financial officer, will stay with the district through November.
