Poulenc@PSU: What Makes Music French?

Thursday, November 1 | 7:00 - 8:15 PM
Lincoln Hall 225
Free and open to the public

What is it about the music of Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Francis Poulenc, and others of the period that sounds French to us? PSU music history professor Jelena Simonovic Schiff, PSU voice professor emeritus Richard Poppino, and Portland writer and critic Mark Mandel join moderator Robert Wilder Blue for a lively discussion of French music from the 1880s to the 1950s, examining nationalism in music, the rebellion against “Wagnerism,” and the influence of Emmanuel Chabrier and Erik Satie on a generation of composers who defined an era.
