Portland State School of Music & Theater presents Jazz Symphonica, a first-ever performance featuring the combined ensembles of the PSU Orchestra and Big Band on Monday, June 4th at 7:00 PM in Portland State University's Lincoln Performance Hall. Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors. Students with ID are admitted free. Tickets are available online at PSU Box Office or at the door.  

Following in the tradition of the Netherlands’ famed Metropole Orchestra, Jazz Symphonica is a collaboration between the PSU Jazz Ensemble, directed by Derek Sims, and the PSU Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Ken Selden which will feature a hybrid ensemble comprised of 58 musicians, as well as special guests soloists. The performance will featured commissioned arrangements of works by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Jim Pepper from Portland jazz composers Ezra Weiss, John Nastos, Dan Gaynor and Douglas Detrick. Featured guest artists will include trumpeter Paul Mazzio, and vocalist Sherry Alves, Director of PSU’s Jazz Vocal program, as well as student instrumental and vocal soloists. 

About The PSU Jazz Program 
The Portland State University Jazz Studies program offers students the opportunity to study with outstanding jazz artist/educators, while developing their individual voices and skills as improvisers, composers, arrangers and band leaders. In addition to multiple large ensemble and combo opportunities including the PSU Big Band, PSU Vocal Ensemble, PSU Salsa Band and numerous jazz combos, students interact with national and international guest artists including Paquito D’Rivera, Lenny White, Buster Williams, Eduardo Velazquez and John Patitucci and gain professional experience in clubs, recording studios, Indie music bands area jazz festivals.

About the PSU Orchestra 
The PSU Orchestra, conducted by Ken Selden, performs a broad range of symphonic repertoire. Under his direction, the PSU Orchestra has received three awards in Adventurous Programming from ASCAP and the League of American Orchestras. Past guest artists with the orchestra include Manuel Barrueco, Matt Haimovitz, Anna Polonsky, Awadagin Pratt and Orli Shaham, as well as PSU faculty members Hamilton Cheifetz and Carol Sindell. The PSU Orchestra also performs annually with the PSU Opera Theatre and The Portland Ballet.
