Anon(ymous) news,
or “why aren’t my ticket reservations going through?”

These past several months have been filled with ups and downs and unexpected challenges for live theater because of the global pandemic. At an educational institution like ours, the challenges to train our students in their chosen theater major—in isolation—is even more challenging. Many creative solutions have emerged. For fall term, we embarked on a “live” streamed event for Naomi Iizuka‘s Anon(ymous). Our students have had the best possible theater experience during this pandemic from zoom auditions and rehearsals, to opportunities for lighting and sound design for a theater space, to learning how to live stream a production, and through tech and dress together in the theater space (socially distant of course!) For the staff, we've learned much about health and safety, and the technical aspects of streaming a "live" production to the world. We had an international audience waiting to join us including some of you!

However, we have had to cancel the entire run of Anon(ymous) in the interest of the safety and health of all involved. Although we followed all the Covid protocols (and then some!) once the cast and crew were in the building, we could not know what might come in with any one of us from outside. That proved the case here.

Theater will survive! The pandemic is a hard taskmaster, but we are learning and will be stronger because of it. During Shakespeare’s day, the Elizabethan and Jacobean theaters were frequently closed because of the bubonic plague. The official rule was that once the death rate exceeded thirty per week, performances would be canceled. In spite of the closures, not all was lost, however. James Shapiro in his The Year of Lear, Shakespeare in 1606, suggests that Shakespeare wrote King Lear, Macbeth, and Antony and Cleopatra that year.

We’ve had some preliminary discussions about a possible production of Anon(ymous) in the first week of January. I'm hopeful. And perhaps next year, there will be some amazing new plays written in this time of Covid.
