Title IX Training for Principal Investigators

Respecting Boundaries and Understanding Power Differentials

Principal Investigators are strongly encouraged to participate in this training.

The National Science Foundation has implemented a new policy on sexual harassment (https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/issuances/in144.pdf) that requires awardee institutions to report findings and determinations of sexual harassment and requires PIs to receive appropriate training on sexual harassment. The National Institutes of Health and NASA will likely implement similar policies shortly. Additionally, NASA has conducted a Title IX audit of one of our science departments to evaluate if the department and the university are providing the appropriate Title IX training, recruiting students and faculty in an equitable manner, and providing appropriate resources to students and employees. NASA also expects all departments that receive NASA funding to conduct a Title IX self-assessment.

This workshop will provide faculty with the information and tools necessary to recognize, prevent, and respond to sexual harassment and sexual assault.  This interactive workshop provides an introduction to the national landscape of sexual and gender-based harassment, particularly pertaining to situations in research environments; familiarizes participants with university policy and procedures pertaining to harassment and reporting, and reviews campus resources. Participants will unpack case-scenarios of situations relevant to researchers on campus and in remote field situations. Real-life examples of situations that are commonly encountered by researchers will inform these scenarios. The goal of this workshop is to raise awareness of issues relevant to sexual harassment and assault, to understand the formal and informal complaint processes, strengthen the skills necessary for an effective response to disclosures, and begin to build strategies for prevention. Some of you may have already attended a training on Title IX, but this training will be specific to concerns that arise in research environments.

As a Principal Investigator, you are strongly encouraged to attend this workshop.
