About the Lecture

Ambassador Prudence Bushnell looks through a survivor’s and feminist eye at lessons of policy and leadership learned from the 1994 genocide in Rwanda and the 1998 al Qaeda bombings in Kenya – where she was serving as ambassador – and Tanzania.  As she provides highlights of her experiences in the Washington inter-agency community and ambassador to the republics of Kenya and Guatemala,  she will open the discussion to “smart” power as an alternative to “soft” or “hard”  power.  Her book, “Terrorism, Betrayal and Resilience: My Story the 1998 U.S. Embassy Bombings” provides further insights into the national security arena."

About the Speaker: Ambassador (Ret.) Prudence Bushnell served as U.S. foreign service officer in India, Senegal, Kenya, Guatemala and Washington, D.C. As Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Africa Bureau (1993-96) and Ambassador to the Republics of Kenya and
Guatemala (1996-2002) she practiced the leadership she “preached” as a management and leadership trainer before joining government service. After leaving the Foreign Service, Prudence founded the Levitt Leadership Institute at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Of all her awards, she is most proud of being cited as one of the “20 All Time Greatest Feds” by Government Executive Magazine in 2011.
