The Center for Global Leadership in Sustainability held its first summer short course this August: The Oregon Business and Sustainability Immersion of Inquiry (OBSII). The unique elective course, worth four graduate-level credits, was offered to PSU graduate students of all disciplines.

The course, spanning 10 days, was an intense combination of workshops, site visits, and reflection journals, and culminated in the submission of a systems-based business leadership report. Students met on campus each morning and promptly departed for the day's activities, which included visits to local sustainability-inspired businesses such as Nike Inc., the Audubon Society of Portland, SERA Architects, Burgerville, and Adelsheim Vineyard, among others.

Kara Sigua, current MBA student and OBSII participant, appreciated the opportunity to get out of the classroom and into innovative businesses.

"Speaking face to face with executives, we heard firsthand about the successes and the challenges that these local businesses are experiencing," said Sigua. "I left the course with a better understanding of the sustainability movement and with some tools for moving it forward."
