This family-friendly festival offers a wealth of cultural experiences, tastes and entertainment

Come celebrate the Japanese and Japanese-American New Year's tradition of Mochitsuki.  Mochitsuki-Portland is Portland's largest Japanese New Year's festival, bringing together community members, resources, artists, and performers who share an interest in Japanese and Japanese-American culture, for this 1-day family-friendly event.

Traditionally, Mochitsuki is,the pounding of rice into tasty, sticky rice cakes, called mochi, that symbolizes starting the New Year with a full belly in hopes of abundance in the year ahead. 

Entertainment & hands-on activities includes:  

  • Taiko drumming
  • Japanese Dance
  • Calligraphy
  • Origami
  • Ikebana (traditional flower arranging)
  • Tea Ceremony
  • Traditional Japanese mochi pounding
  • Children's bento cooking classes 

Enjoy Japanese food onsite or to take home.
