Dr. Michele Gambaurd

Michele Ruth Gamburd, a cultural anthropologist, received her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1995. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. Her theoretical interests focus on globalization, gender relations, violence, and social change. The main topic of her research is the migration of labor from Sri Lanka to West Asia (the Middle East), on which she has written a book and numerous articles. She has also completed a book manuscript on the political economy of alcohol use in Sri Lanka and performed research on the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
