The Fariborz Maseeh Department of Mathematics and Statistics is dedicated to excellence in research and teaching in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. Guided by the mission of Portland State University and by the principles of disciplinary excellence and cross-disciplinary engagement, we are particularly committed to building expertise and providing leadership in such areas as applied and computational mathematics and statistics and mathematics education.

Professor Mau Nam Nguyen receives a single-investigator National Science Foundation grant entitled “Nonsmooth Analysis and Numerical Optimization Techniques Beyond Convexity” budgeted at $119,984 for the period 08/15/2017 - 07/31/2020.

Derek Garton, Mathematics and Statistics faculty, has received a three-year, $6,000 grant from the NSF for collaborative research in number theory. The award will support a new event titled Oregon Number Theory Days with participation from mathematicians at PSU, OSU, and UO.
