Merē Jorgensen didn't think she had much of a chance when she submitted her illustration for a movie poster contest for "Riddick," the third movie in the "Chronicles of Riddick" film series.

After all, she turned it in just one day before the contest ended. And she wasn't particularly familiar with the series' story, having only seen one of the movies.

But Vin Diesel, who plays the movie's antihero protagonist, hand-picked Jorgensen's design from nearly 800 entries, according to Regal Entertainment Group, which sponsored the contest.

Jorgensen, 23, lives near Beaverton and studies art at Portland State University. She hopes to open her own art studio after she graduates in the spring.

She primarily works in acrylic and pencil, then scans her illustrations into Photoshop. She completes her work on a tablet, she said.

"I always drew," Jorgensen said. "I'm told that (as a small child) I would put on art shows and try to sell my pieces. So I guess it was meant to be."

When her friend, Candi Diaz, sent her a link to the contest a few days before it ended, Jorgensen said she spent 12 hours creating a poster mainly to make Diaz happy.

Now Jorgensen is happy, too. On Sept. 6, Regal Entertainment Group flew Jorgensen to Los Angeles and put her up in a hotel so she could attend a screening of the movie. As the contest's grand-prize winner, Jorgensen will receive a framed copy of her poster, autographed by Diesel.

Diaz, for one, isn't surprised that her friend is suddenly rubbing elbows with celebrities. Diaz said Jorgensen's poster captures the atmosphere of the movie perfectly.

"I just figured she would win," she said. "...Her artwork is amazing and she's very talented. I'm her No. 1 fan."
