Jess Miller, a recent graduate from the Masters Program in Statistics co-authored the paper "Machine Learning Techniques in Cancer Prognosis Modeling and Performance Assessment" that appeared in Frontiers of Biostatistical Methods and Applications in Clinical Oncology. The work is based on results from her MS in Statistics project.  The paper is co-authored with Professor Yiyi Chen from OHSU. Jess is currently a PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Michigan.

Jay Gopalakrishnan is organizing a focused international workshop at PSU under the auspices of the US Association for Computational Mechanics. Please see the conference website for details. Early registration ends this week.

Mau Nam Nguyen receives a single-investigator National Science Foundation grant entitled “Nonsmooth Analysis and Numerical Optimization Techniques Beyond Convexity” budgeted at $119,984 for the period 08/15/2017 - 07/31/2020.

Derek Garton, Mathematics and Statistics faculty, has received a three-year, $6,000 grant from the NSF for collaborative research in number theory. The award will support a new event titled Oregon Number Theory Days with participation from mathematicians at PSU, OSU, and UO.

Mathematics faculty Mau Nam Nguyen has been appointed to the editorial boards of two research journals Optimization Letters (published by Springer) and Optimization (published by Taylor & Francis).

Mathematics faculty Marek Elzanowski was elected corresponding member of the  Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti, Classe di Scienze, University of Messina.

The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has just funded a new 3-year grant for studying discontinuous Petrov Galerkin solvers for harmonic wave propagation problems. The total budget of $649,560 is almost equally split between PSU and The University of Texas at Austin. The PSU portion of the work is directed by mathematics faculty Jay Gopalakrishnan.
