How and When to Apply

Applications for Fall 2019 are now closed. The application system will re-open in mid-November. 

MA TESOL students from all western states are eligible for Oregon in-state tuition rates

NEW: The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is now one of a handful of programs at Portland State University that participates in the Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP).

Starting in Fall 2019, graduate students pay in-state tuition if they are residents of one of these 14 western states (in addition to Guam and the Mariana Islands). The form for the WRGP is available here

Important Details:

  • Admission decisions are sent on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed after the deadline. 
  • Applicants are not required to complete the Graduate Record Examination. 
  • The Department requires two letters of reference with the online application.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to graduate study, the student is expected to hold a Bachelor of Arts or equivalent with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. GRE scores are not required for admission to the MA TESOL program. Students must meet PSU's minimum admissions requirements

Pre-Admission Credits

Prior to admission into the MA TESOL program, you can take up to 16 credits for the MA TESOL degree as a postbaccalaureate (postbac) or non-degree student. These pre-admission credits will apply to your degree after you are admitted. More information on pre-admission credit can be found in the 2019/2020 bulletin

Information Sessions

Prospective students are invited to attend an information session led by the Department Chair to informally discuss the MA TESOL Program.
