Christopher M. Monsere, Ph.D., P.E., Associate Professor and Chair, Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Christopher M. Monsere is a Chair and an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the in the Maseeh College of Engineering & Computer Science at Portland State University. He is also an affiliated faculty member of the School of Urban Studies & Planning (USP). Monsere received his BSCE from the University of Detroit Mercy (Detroit, Michigan) in 1995; his MSCE with an emphasis in transportation from Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa) in 1997; and his Ph.D. in civil engineering at Iowa State University in 2001.

Dr. Monsere’s current research agenda broadly covers the area of multimodal transportation safety; management and dissemination of large transportation datasets.  Much of his recent work and been focused on helping cities understand key questions related to urban urban cycling infrastructure. In the classroom, Dr. Monsere has strong student-centered focus and works to provide his students opportunities to be involved in research, get involved with the profession, and support their career development. Incorporating real examples in his class projects is a theme of most of his courses - his students have studied many real-world problems for local public agencies.

Dr. Monsere is past co-chair of Transportation Research Board's ANB20 - Safety Data, Analysis, and Evaluation committee, on the editorial board of Journal of Transportation Safety and Security, a former member of the TRB Task Force to develop the Highway Safety Manual (ANB25T) and served on two NCHRP panels (Review of AASHTO Strategic Highway Safety Plan Guidebooks and the Future Strategic Highway Safety Research Program). Prior to joining the faculty at Portland State University, Monsere was the Highway Safety Engineer at the Oregon Department of Transportation in Salem from 2000 to 2004. Dr. Monsere is licensed professional engineer in the state of Oregon. In his free time, Dr. Monsere enjoys spending time with his family, coaching soccer, and backpacking.
