Football kicks off Sept. 1

The Portland State Vikings are kicking off the 2012 football season with the most local Oregon recruits since the team joined the Big Sky Conference in 1996.

Of the 24 new players, 16 are from the Pacific Northwest and 13 are from Oregon.

"I think it's great that PSU really recruits hard on the Oregon scene,” says Mitch Gaulke, a junior offensive lineman from West Linn. “By recruiting locally we will make Portland State's name bigger and better."

Head Coach Nigel Burton says that the team’s attitude has been great and the players are hungry for the playoffs. They want to beat last year’s 7-4 record, their best since 2006.

Cheer them on at the first game Sept. 1 against Carroll College at Jeld-Wen Field. Go Viks!
