Archaeology First Thursdays: Mario Ramirez Galan

Join the Anthropology Department for its Archaelogy First Thursdays event. Mario Ramirez Galan, an adjunct history professor at the University of Portland, will present, "Analyzing a Medieval Siege Through Geographic Information Systems, Alcala La Vieja, Spain."

Galan’s presentation describes a landscape archaeology project that used GIS to examine the Battle of Alcala la Vieja, which took place 900 years ago near Madrid, Spain. The research used visibility, distances and optimal paths to gain insights on the military engagement. Results from the archaeological project contrast with written sources about the battle, highlighting the importance of using multiple lines of inquiry to explore the human past.
