Ken Ruoff, History faculty and Center for Japanese Studies director, has been named an Ambassador for Hokkaido University. The three-year appointment comes with the expectation that Ruoff will work to expand student, faculty and scholarly exchanges between Hokkaido University and PSU as well as with other North American universities. Before becoming a professor at PSU, Ruoff was a member of the Faculty of Law at Hokkaido University, where he did the research for his book on post-war Japan’s monarchy. The book was awarded the Osaragi Jiro Prize for Commentary, Japan’s equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. An updated version of the book, “Japan’s Imperial House in the Postwar Era, 1945-2019,” will be released in late November.
