The Linguists: A Film to be shown at the 5th Avenue Cinema
Thursday, October 25, 2018 - 7:30pm

Scientists estimate that of 7,000 languages in the world, half will be gone by the end of this century. THE LINGUISTS joins David Harrison and Gregory Anderson, scientists racing to document languages on the verge of extinction. In the rugged landscapes of Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists' resolve is tested by the very forces stifling languages: institutionalized racism and violent economic unrest. David and Greg's journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures and communities at risk.

Greg Anderson, one of the film's co-stars will answer questions after the film. Greg is the Director of the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages in Salem, a non-profit organization dedicated to the documentation, revitalization, and maintenance of endangered languages. He has published widely in the fields of historical linguistics, descriptive grammar, morphology, verb typology, and the linguistics of Munda, Salishan, and Ogonoid languages.

Sponsored by the departments of Anthropology, Applied Linguistics, World Languages and Literature and History.
