With particular intensity during the last decade, Confucian academies (shuyuan書院) originally dating to as early as the Song period (960-1279), have been renovated, and even completely rebuilt, by local governments across China as sites of cultural heritage tourism. The rebuilding of Confucian academies as sites of cultural heritage tourism is motivated by a perceived need to educate people about Confucianism and to generate pride in Chinese civilization through valorizing one of its most iconic markers. Based on field research undertaken in September, 2012, this talk will focus on the restoration of four important academies dating from the Song period

Linda Walton is Professor Emerita of History and International Studies at Portland State University. She received her B.A. degree from Wellesley College and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She has lived and studied in Japan, Taiwan, and China. In addition to her book, Academies and Society in Southern Sung China (Hawaii, 1999), she has published journal articles and book chapters on the social and intellectual history of Song and Yuan China (10th -14th  centuries).  Recent research includes a study of academies during the Mongol Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) and a project on the restoration of Confucian academies in contemporary China as sites of cultural heritage tourism.

Before the event, the Confucius Institute at PSU will host a Chinese conversation corner for guests to practice their Chinese language skills.  The CI-PSU corner will begin at 6pm.

This event is free and open to the public.
