PLEASE NOTE The Geography labs in Cramer Hall 469 and 475 are closed for the Spring term to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus. However, computers at the PSU library are equipped with GIS software. Please visit the library website for hours and resources.

Available to anyone taking a Geography class during regular office hours Monday through Friday.

Geography Lab rules

CH 469 use is limited to: students enrolled in Geography Technique classes.
CH 475 use is limited to students enrolled in a Geography class.

Use of both labs is limited to work for Geography classes only.
Be respectful to other users.
No inappropriate use of the internet.
No food or drink (water bottles are OK).
No printing of personal material (e.g., personal e-mails).
No excessive printing
Backup important files to portable media regularly - the Geography Department is not responsible for any data lost from the lab computers.
Personal files will be removed from the computers at the end of each term.
Please help keep the lab clean, cleaning supplies are available in the Geography Department.
The door of CH 469 should remain closed at all time unless there is an instructor or teaching assistant present.
The door of CH 475 should be closed if nobody is using it. The last person out should make sure it is secured.

Plotting Posters

Important note: For those Geography classes that require a poster, students have already been charged a specific plotter fee in their tuition to print their poster in the Geography Department.  Other locations on campus will charge you for printing a poster…up to $40-80, and places like FedEx will be even more expensive.

Turn in your poster file in pdf or Powerpoint format to the Geography Office on the date the instructor identifies (generally two days before poster presentation). If poster files are delivered late, we cannot guarantee they will be plotted in time for your class.

You can make your poster in a variety of software programs such as PowerPoint, Illustrator, etc. Be sure to size your page appropriately (usually 36”X48”, depending on your instructor’s instructions). Add the course number and your last name to the file name so that we can send the printed posters to the correct class.

Please check with your instructor for any additional formatting guidelines.

Delivery method: Your instructor may ask you to send the poster directly to them. In general, files should be delivered in pdf or PowerPoint format to the Geography front office staff in CH424, on some sort of removable media (thumb drive, disk, etc.), which will be returned to you.

Formatting tips:

  • The final poster can be as large as 36" x 48" and may be oriented either landscape or portrait format.
  • It is a good idea to allow 1” margins
  • Avoid large patches of very dark, saturated colors either as background or on maps/images.
  • Any raster images you include (e.g., map images, aerial photos, scans) should have a resolution of 300 dpi after sizing*. Since the poster will be plotted at 300 dpi, a higher resolution image does not add anything to image quality and will just produce a larger size file. However, less than 300 dpi runs the risk of producing a graphic that looks pixelated, and this commonly occurs when you resize an image to take up more space. (see below for more info).

*How to determine dpi:

In Windows: Navigate to the image in Windows Explorer (“my computer”).  Right click on the image and choose Properties.  Select the Details tab; you will see the height and width in pixels. Divide those numbers by 300 and that is the maximum size (in inches) that your image can be on the poster.

On a Mac: Navigate to the image location and right click on the file (control + click).  Choose Get Info. The pixel count (Dimensions) is listed under More Info.
