Financing Graduate School

Paying for grad school can be challenging, and the department’s resources to help with this are limited.  We are only able to offer a few teaching assistantships and modest scholarships; students may be offered research assistantships related to funded faculty projects, and some find internships or other paid work through entities like the Center for Spatial Analysis and Research (CSAR).  A typical student will combine some departmental support with paid employment (often developed out of internships). An exceptionally livable city and Oregon’s only metropolis, Portland and the wider region is home to a number of public agencies, non-profits, and businesses where our students have found both temporary and permanent jobs. Unleash your entrepreneurial spirit and go after funding. There are many, often obscure sources of support, but no comprehensive, central clearinghouse of information. The Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) does offer some strategies and useful links for financing your education.
