Friday, November 16, 2012 - 12:00pm

The Portland Center for Public Humanities cordially invites you to the Faculty Lunch and Lecture Series.

In November, we will welcome English Department faculty Susan E. Kirtley. She will be presenting her new book

Lynda Barry: Girlhood Through the Looking Glass

Friday, November 16, 12 p.m.
407 Neuberger Hall
724 SW Harrison

Join PSU English Department faculty Susan E. Kirtley for a presentation of her recently published book on the art of Lynda Barry, best known for her long-running comic strip Ernie Pook's Comeek.

In Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass, Dr. Kirtley concentrates on Barry's recurring focus on figures of young girls, in a variety of mediums and genres. In tracing Barry's aesthetic and intellectual development, Kirtley reveals Barry's work to be groundbreaking in its understanding of femininity and feminism.

Copies of Lynda Barry: Girlhood through the Looking Glass will be available for purchase at the event. 20% of the proceeds from your purchase will go in support of the Portland Center for Public Humanities.

Susan Kirtley is an Assistant Professor of English and Director of Rhetoric and Composition at PSU.  She returned to her hometown and joined the faculty at PSU in the fall of 2011 after several years at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.  Her research interests include early women authors, writing and technology, visual rhetoric, and comic art, and her book, Lynda Barry: Girlhood Through the Looking Glass was published by the University Press of Mississippi in March 2012.
