Ciera Maiava

Hi my name is Ciera Maiava, I am from Hawaii and this is my fourth year here at Portland State and my major is Electrical Engineering. For my career, I hope to go into the biomedical engineering field and work with some type of prosthetic or heart pacemaker because I want to be able to help people. A major accomplishment for me would be that I have made it this far in a difficult field that is predominantly caucasian males. If all goes as planned then I will be able to graduate this year and I am so proud of how far I have come. I like being a PSU student because we are right in the heart of Portland and there are so many things to do and it's a beautiful city so it's very different from rural universities. I like being a Scholars for Success in STEM  mentor because I want to be able to help other engineers get through the program and give them advice about schooling. I remember how special it was for me to be able to reach out to my mentor back when I was a freshman. A piece of advice for someone who is starting out in engineering is to not give up and don't freak out right away! It can be very overwhelming and difficult at times but it'll all be worth it in the end and take a break every now and then because you deserve it.
