Professor Shawn Smallman loves teaching online and advising online students. He is particularly interested in innovative pedagogies such as the negotiated syllabus and Universal Design, which give students choices in the classroom, and helps to make information more accessible for everyone. He also advocates teaching students how to use data sets, and has students in some of his classes do data visualizations in the form of a map. Smallman’s research has included fieldwork in three continents related to global health and infectious disease, Indigenous issues, and civil-military relations, which influences the case studies he adopts in his courses. He has also co-authored an introductory textbook in the field with Dr. Kimberley Brown.
