Impact of Giving: Robert Mercer
Mercer, who is 59 and a Portland native, has been a fixture on campus since the mid-70s, when he began his bachelor’s degree in history. Later, he earned a master’s in English and has worked in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences since 1992.

Honorary Degree Recipient: Duncan Campbell
Duncan Campbell founded four children's organizations—Youth Resources providing funding for individual children to experience personal growth such as music or dance lessons or a trip to the beach; the Children's Institute promoting investments in early childhood programs; the Children's Course, a Gladstone golf course for at-risk children and their families; and most notably, Friends of the Children.

John Salmon (’67 MA ’72) and Marcia Schulmerich (class of ’69), are leading examples of alumni who are committed to scholarships. They graduated from PSU with biology degrees and built accomplished careers in health care administration. A World of Cool: David and Janice Yaden
Coming from hardworking, blue collar, supportive but poor families, the Yadens both received scholarships during their time at Portland State and remained integral to their future successes. This year two undergraduate students in the College of Urban & Public Affairs will be the first recipients of the Yaden family endowed scholarship; their goal for this endowment is to help students from similar backgrounds. “It makes me really happy to think that someone like me whose father had maybe finished 8th Grade could get a university degree with a little financial help.” Janice says.
