PSU business faculty awarded for research excellence

Portland State University business faculty David Cadiz and Berrin Erdogan were honored this evening at PSU’s Research Awards Dinner.

Cadiz earned PSU’s Non-tenure Track Faculty Research Award for the quality, volume and impact of his research and scholarship, as well as his extraordinary success engaging students in rigorous research and academic discourse.

“David brings a unique blend of business experience, knowledge of psychological theory, research design and an overarching passion for research to his work,” says colleague and award nominator David Caughlin.

Cadiz’s research is broadly focused on the influence of diversity and occupational health in the workplace and is influenced by his applied work experiences in the healthcare, training and technology industries. He investigates multiple aspects of the aging workforce and the effects of age in the workplace, including how age biases, job design and an organization’s culture affect an employee’s work attitudes, and desire to stay in the workforce and health.

“Guided by his rigorous training and passion to understand age diversity in the workplace, David has amassed a high-quality and ever-growing collection of scientific works and contributions,” adds Caughlin.

Cadiz earned his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from PSU in 2010.

Erdogan was named The School of Business Researcher of Year by The School of Business deans. Pamela Tierney, associate dean of faculty and research, says Erdogan was selected because of her substantive and impressive body of research, both in terms of quality and quantity.

“Berrin is one of the most highly published scholars in her field as evidenced by the number of her articles in premiere journals, book chapters and books she has published,” says Tierney.

Erdogan has been acknowledged and honored for the contributions of her work through highly selective appointments, including a SIOP (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology) Fellow, as well as associate editor and editorial board positions for leading journals in her field.

“Because she is renowned in her field, Berrin has helped build the reputation of The School of Business as a place that produces top-level scholarship,” Tierney adds.

Through her role as research director, Erdogan has also made significant impact on the research culture at The School of Business and serves as a mentor to faculty.

Erdogan’s research focuses on two themes. First, she examines how leaders lead through the relationships they build with their employees, and the implications of manager-employee relationships for employee effectiveness, retention and wellbeing. Second, she is interested in understanding person-job fit and misfit, with a focus on why and how employees find themselves overqualified for their jobs and the consequences of being overqualified.

The Research Awards Dinner is part of PSU’s Research Week, a week-long series of events intended to honor and call attention to the exceptional research, including scholarship and creativity, of PSU faculty members and students.
