OIT swaps labs with the Math Department to facilitate the creation of the Math Emporium.

Did you know that more than 80% of PSU’s graduates enroll in mathematics and statistics courses during their PSU experience? These are required courses in many majors and students are encouraged to take them as early as possible in their university experience. Unfortunately, many students have gaps in their math knowledge and delay taking required math classes, often with negative consequences for their academic progression.

As part of the recent Provost’s Challenge #47 the Math Department will be creating the Math Emporium lab - an innovative teaching, learning, and tutoring environment to help support the delivery of math courses on campus and facilitate student learning. To make room for this exciting new facility, the Office of Information Technology (OIT) is swapping lab spaces with the Math Department. This winter, OIT is relocating its Neuberger general access lab (previously located in the basement of Neuberger Hall), NH 96 to NH 461/465.

With the addition of NH 461/465, the total number of OIT-managed computers for the fourth floor of Neuberger Hall will go from 99 to 152 workstations! While this represents a loss of a handful of workstations for OIT, it will give students more available lab options, with the Instructional Computing Classrooms (ICC) in NH 437, 439, 446, 448 & 450 open as general access labs when they are not in use as instructional spaces.

The current labs on the fourth floor of Neuberger Hall are often underutilized. By consolidating all of lab spaces to the fourth floor, we will be able to streamline our support and offer students more available lab options.” - Mark Walker, Technology Classrooms and Labs Manager, Instructional Technology Services, OIT.

The new NH 461/465 lab will open as a general access lab January 6, 2014. It will be staffed by an OIT lab attendant and keep the same hours as NH 96 (M-Th: 8:00am - 9:00pm; F: 8:00am - 5:00pm). NH 96 will be closed during Winter term while it is being remodeled into the Math Emporium. When it opens, the Math Emporium will have 10 new workstations in addition to the 70 that NH 96 currently has.  When not in use as a instructional space, the Emporium will be open as a general purpose computer lab. OIT is very excited to support the development of the Math Emporium. This initiative is an integral part of PSU’s goals of reThinking teaching and learning spaces on campus and represents a significant move towards improving student academic success.
