Errin Beck, Phoebe Daurio, and Gwen Heller Tuason, English Language Program (ESL) instructors; and Kristi Kang, Intensive English Language Porgram (IELP) Student Life, presented "Fusing Social Activism with Cooperative Task-Based Learning" at the TRI-TESOL conference in Des Moines, Wash., Oct. 22. The presentation included the results of a term-long project in which advanced ESL students in the IELP planned and executed a silent auction benefit for Haitian earthquake victims, raising over $2,000 for the cause. Presenters shared the pedagogical rationale and tips for conducting such a project, shared student-created materials for the event, and discussed the challenges met by instructors and students.
