Mariana Garcia Medina

A leader in the making

PSU has helped political science graduate Mariana Garcia Medina realize her leadership potential. She received mentoring in the New Leadership Oregon program from the Center for Women's Leadership, interned in the Portland mayor’s office and was director of the PSU Latina women’s empowerment organization Las Mujeres. She is about to start another internship with City Commissioner Nick Fish. Medina came to the U.S. from Mexico with her parents 18 years ago. As an undocumented student, she brings a resilient attitude to the leadership tasks she takes on.

Josh Hanson

Linked for success

Graduating senior Josh Hanson knows the job is the right fit. Hanson’s studies in supply chain management in the School of Business School Administration led to an internship at the Boeing factory in Gresham. He supports the complex interdependencies that take place among suppliers, operators, engineers and analysts to create aircraft parts. If all goes well, the internship may turn into a job this fall. Hanson is graduating magna cum laude and will be cheered by his PSU football teammates.

Willow Wallace

From poverty to pre-med

The child of a single mother who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after serving in Iraq, Willow Wallace saw the burden that disease can place on a family. Now graduating cum laude in biology, Wallace will work full-time at Oregon Health & Science University’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute as a research assistant. Next year, she will be among the first to graduate from the new OHSU-PSU School of Public Health with a health science degree, the next step toward becoming a physician and researcher specializing in infectious diseases.
