Civic Engagement Breakfast: The PSU Social Determinants of Health Initiative
Thursday, April 18, 2013 - 9:00am to Thursday, April 18, 2013 - 10:30am

Portland State University’s new Social Determinants of Health Initiative promotes research and education to identify, understand, and address social determinants of health.  This interdisciplinary group of scholars is engaging in a number of ongoing community-engaged research projects. In this session you will learn about two research projects from the researcher and community partner perspective: 1) the My Life Project, which seeks to increase the self-determination of youth in foster care, and 2) the HEARTH project, which seeks to understand the relationships between housing, employment, recovery from substance abuse, and health.

Participants will then break into three groups to help shape the goals and activities of the Social Determinants of Health Initiative, to discuss strategies for effectively partnering with community organizations in research, or to discuss ways to incorporate students in community-engaged research. Join this session and learn about ways to connect your teaching and scholarship to this initiative.
