The hard work of one of PSU's newest resource centers was recognized last week with the announcement that the Resource Center for Students with Children (RCSC) would be the recipient of the Region V Innovative Program Award, which is presented by NASPA, the North American association for student affairs professionals. The NASPA award, which is awarded on a yearly basis, is conferred upon institutions or individuals who have developed and implemented an outstanding program, especially programs that further the growth of students and enhance life on campus in an innovative way.

The breadth of the program at PSU made it the perfect candidate for receiving the NASPA award, as the RCSC's program consists of three main service areas, which consist of the resource center, the next is the Jim Sells Childcare Assistance Program, and finally, Little Vikings Flexible Childcare Center. The RCSC hosts events for students with children and several times a term, providing much needed peer support in a relaxed, social setting. The center also offers student parents opportunities to get off campus and meet with other student parents without their children. For many of our events, free childcare is provided. The resource center also maintains lactation rooms across campus, providing clean, comfortable and safe facilities for breastfeeding.

Nominations for regional awards must be supported by letters that which demonstrate the impact of the program on the local community, as competition is stiff and the award is competitive. But support poured in from former and current students to support the application for the NASPA award, with many students emphasizing the varied ways the program has positively impacted their life and supported them in reaching their goals.
The RCSC will be recognized at the Western Regional Conference on November 9-12 in Anaheim, CA. All regional award recipients will be forwarded for consideration for NASPA central awards, as applicable. This award is a huge success for the RCSC, a small, yet important program that supports the roughly 20% of students at Portland State University that are parents.
