Week of Teaching

Celebrate innovative teaching at Portland State University this year at Week of Teaching 2019. Join fellow PSU instructors at three days of workshops, social hours and share-outs, building community around teaching and learning. From interdisciplinary workshops led by your colleagues to dynamic course design sessions with instructional designers, you'll enjoy new professional development opportunities, get up to date on emerging PSU initiatives, and connect with fellow educators. Perks include special giveaways and raffles, complementary professional headshots, and a celebratory Week of Teaching happy hour. 

Week of Teaching is open to all faculty, instructors, graduate teaching assistants, adjuncts, and staff. Participants are welcome to come and go throughout the days as their schedule allows. Coffee and tea and snacks will be provided each day. All events are first-come, first-serve, so plan to arrive early to claim your seat! For those participants not currently in Portland, select sessions will be available remotely.

Blank Slate: What If Your Syllabus Could Be Empty?

The goal of this session is to present, discuss, and share knowledge, ideas, and experiences about partly or entirely student-created curricula. "Blank slate" teaching approaches are said to empower students, to remove teacher-student power differences, and to increase student motivation and engagement. What's been done and what hasn't? What are the lessons learned? What could you use in your courses? Come and join us for an inspiring conversation about learner-chosen alternative educational approaches.

We will examine how to integrate social and political issues into STEM courses and why it matters. We will work through an activity and discuss student reactions to such activities.

Getting Started with Open Textbooks
Karen Bjork, Digital Initiatives, PSU Library; Jaime Wood, Office of Academic Innovation; Amy Hofer, Coordinator of Oregon's Statewide Open Education Library Services
Faculty and GTAs are invited to attend the Open Textbook Review Workshop, where you can discover open textbooks in your field. After the workshop, you will have the opportunity to write a short review of an open textbook from the Open Textbook Library and receive a $200 stipend. Your review will benefit other faculty considering open textbooks.

Fostering Learning Engagement in Online Language Teaching

Learn about online language course design at PSU. Language Coordinators and Instructors will share strategies and techniques they have implemented in online language courses. Each instructor will share their unique perspective and experience, including reflection on how well the various approaches seemed to work. Participants will hear about strategies for student success and engagement in online courses and will have the opportunity to exchange ideas about how other approaches might work.

What Can 3000 Students Tell Us About Teaching Excellence?: 
Lessons from CUPA's Annual Teaching Awards
Kris Henning and Chris Shortell, College of Urban & Public Affairs
What do students think makes for great teaching? Why do some instructors stand out to them? Over the past seven years, the College of Urban and Public Affairs has conducted a student-driven teaching award program where we have solicited votes and written comments from over 3000 students. This session, led by Kris Henning (CCJ) and Chris Shortell (PS), presents key lessons that can be drawn from an analysis of those comments, reinforcing recent research into effective practices in psychotherapy that are translatable to the classroom. This session will encourage those practices that resonate most effectively with our students.

This session will look at ideas and best practices to use Zoom, a synchronous videoconferencing and collaboration platform, as a tool for teaching and student engagement. Tina Penman, Speech and Hearing Sciences, will share her experiences implementing Zoom for a large course Winter term 2019. Participants will collaboratively explore the platform and and effective practices.

Student Experience Outside of the Classroom + Lunch 
Office of Student Success
Students enter the classroom with a variety of experiences, identities, and challenges that stretch beyond or are in conjunction with their academic experience. Centering on the student experience outside the classroom will be an engaging and unique perspective on faculty’s view of the student experience. This session will also create opportunities for input and dialogue that may lead to collaboration between faculty and staff. This interactive session provides a unique lens on the student experience and explores how a greater understanding of this experience might lead to increased student engagement and academic success. Participants will discuss pedagogical strategies for use in and outside of the classroom.

With a combined 50+ years of experience supporting teaching with technology, the OAI support staff knows a thing or two. Come get tips and shortcuts you can use to organize your course, and make life easier for you and your students.

Five Tips for Working with Multilingual Graduate Students
Linnea Spitzer, Intensive English Language Program
Multilingual graduate students (both international and domestic) are often seen as coming to academia with several handicaps, lacking the linguistic and cultural capital necessary to be full participants in American academic discourse. By approaching student support from an “academic literacies” perspective, this session will give professors working with multilingual graduate students a fresh perspective on ways to tap into their students’ academic strengths and support their disciplinary growth. Participants in this workshop will walk away with five simple strategies for effectively supporting their multilingual graduate students.

Compassionate Communication: Building Community and Belonging in the Classroom
Heather Petzold, University Studies
The Center for Nonviolent Communication states, "Through the practice of NVC, we can learn to clarify what we are observing, what emotions we are feeling, what values we want to live by, and what we want to ask of ourselves and others. We can experience the deep pleasure of contributing to each others' well being." When we, as facilitators, can tap into the feelings and needs of our students through a "power with" approach, we create spaces of belonging. This workshop aims to provide tools and strategies to help our students feel heard, seen, and valued, and to help foster a classroom environment where students are ready to engage with more authenticity and understanding.

Designing an Introductory Online Course through Department Collaboration

This presentation explains my work as coordinator for the development of a collaborative version of an introductory online course involving multiple faculty members. This approach not only strengthened our curriculum by allowing faculty to create modules in their areas of expertise, but functions as a survey of the department's offerings, a platform for building PSU's philosophical community, and a site for advising students interested in pursuing a philosophy major/minor.

Does one of your colleagues keep talking about “adaptive” and you have NO IDEA what they are talking about? Learn first hand in this interactive workshop how an adaptive learning system makes decisions for serving up content based on your input through a simple, easy-to-follow tutorial. After you explore the tool, we will have some time to reflect and dive a little deeper into the different elements of adaptive learning. (Bring your laptop or borrow one from us.

This is part 2 of the adaptive workshop series following the Adaptive Learning Lab. It will consist of 3-4 faculty currently using adaptive components in their courses. The session will be moderated and allow for discussion as well as Q&A from the audience.

Slow Looking at the Portland Art Museum
Sarah Wolf Newlands, Art + Design
How do we encourage students to slow down in an effort to see with more intention and to evaluate what they see from multiple perspectives? Slow Looking with a work of art teaches evidence-based reasoning, promotes clarity in thinking, and encourages students to have something to say about what they see. In this workshop we will collectively harness a quality of attention to awaken our awareness of our biases, and to increase empathy by collectively observing a work of art. Leave with tools to facilitate this in your own classroom and to use in various situations.
