Education is essential in moving societies toward a more sustainable future. Chuck Hopkins, a UN University Chair on Education for Sustainable Development, looks at education's roles in such a future through the four thrusts of the UN Decade of Education for a sustainable future: (1) improving access and retention in basic education, (2) reorienting existing education to address sustainability, (3) improving public understanding and awareness of sustainability, and (4) providing training. Includes examples from cultures around the world.
