Listening to Latino/a Parents: Implications for Equity in Mathematics Education
Thursday, June 5, 2008 - 6:45pm to Thursday, June 5, 2008 - 7:45pm
Professor Marta Civil
The University of Arizona, Tucson

In this talk I draw on over a decade of work with Latino/a parents and mathematics education. Focusing on the concept of parents as intellectual resources, I discuss parents' perceptions about the teaching and learning of mathematics, issues of valorization of knowledge, issues of language and mathematics, and implications for education in general and teacher education in particular. I pay particular attention to the voices of immigrant parents as they talk about their own experiences with mathematics as well as that of their children.
